According to legend a wealthy businessman was refused admission into Riga's Great Guild which is situated opposite this building. He responded by buying the nearest piece of available land and errected this building then placed two cats on each of the turrets, both showing their backsides to the guild. After a legal battle the businessman was eventually admitted to the guild and had the cats repositioned to face the guild.
