Another View of the rail bridge across the river.

Prior to the opening of this bridge in 1872 the only way of crossing the Daugava river was via a pontoon which was put in place each spring then stowed away again in the autumn. During the winter months people would simply walk or drive carts over the ice. People can still be seen prefering to walk across the ice to this day.
